GPS Interface

GPS Software Interface
Interface your GPS with State Explorer™BLM Edition for a powerful navigation tool to know where you've been and where you want to go. State Explorer™BLM Edition includes a GPS software interface supporting select Garmin, Magellan and Lowrance receivers. The interface allows for waypoints to be uploaded and downloaded interactively between the computer and GPS unit with a compatible serial data cable (not included). State Explorer™BLM Edition supports both Latitude-Longitude and UTM coordinate systems. Please refer to the GPS user manual for further setup parameters.

Upload Feature
Upload waypoints stored in your GPS to State Explorer™BLM Edition. Once uploaded, waypoints can be selected from the list and seen highlighted on the map. Waypoints can be added directly to the WayPoint Database where detailed descriptions, representative icons, text documents and digital photographs can be added creating an interactive journal of past outdoor adventures and key locations.

Download Feature
The download feature transfers waypoints from locations highlighted on the interactive map to the GPS receiver. Once downloaded, use the capabilities of the GPS to navigate to that location in the field.

Manual Transfer of GPS Coordinates
State Explorer™BLM Edition provides capabilities to see the coordinates for any location in the state, which can be manually entered into the GPS. Note: Users need to make sure that the coordinate system is the same for both State Explorer and the GPS receiver. Enter coordinates from the GPS into State Explorer™BLM Edition and see the position identified by the red X on the map. With our GPS Interface you are no longer limited to the 6-8-character descriptions used by the GPS unit. And, if your GPS unit is ever lost or damaged, you have waypoint backup for your favorite places.

Game Management Units

View Game Management Unit boundaries (GMU's) as an actual overlay on the topographic map! Simply click on the GMU tab to view these boundaries overlain on maps for the entire state (shown as colored polygons). Use the Inquire tool on any location in the state and see which unit you are in. This is, by far, the most detailed GMU display contained in a recreational mapping product.

Click HERE to download 2005 GMU boundaries for WY.
Instructions:
1 ) Download the 2005 GMU file to your computer.
2 ) Unzip the file and close the State Explorer program, if running.
3 ) Double-click on "Support.exe" to add 2005 GMU's to your WY State Explorer.

Note: Game Management Unit boundaries are derived from data provided by individual state wildlife management agencies. Game Management Units overlays are currently not available for California.

Distance and Terrain Profiles

Reading, understanding and collecting information from topographic maps has never been easier. The Trail and route tools in State Explorer BLM Edition display the topography, distance and elevation data for any route or trail. State Explorer BLM Edition uses the 1:250,000 scale DEM data as a foundation. For each route drawn on the map, the high elevation, low elevation, descending distance, climbing distance, net elevation gain and total ground distance is automatically calculated. These tools help you determine the best way to get into a new destination or find out how far you really did hike last weekend. Use the Draw Trail feature to add and store the route or trail with links to trail descriptions, access directions and digital photographs and other descriptive information used to define the route or trail.

Once the best route is selected, waypoints can be added to the waypoint manager and downloaded into the GPS. No more guessing or trying to trace the route with a string and measure against the map scale. The elevation profile allows you to locate a topographic feature such as the first ridge on the profile shown above. Click the mouse in the profile window and that location (marked with the blue X above) is highlighted on the map.

The elevation numerical data is also displayed in the window at bottom right.

Customization

Most topo maps that have seen any time in the field are full of notes and trails; valuable comments from your time in the field. With State Explorer BLM Edition you can easily add this detailed information and it wont get smeared when it rains or lost when the map wears out. In addition to the notes and trails, add data such as digital photographs and document links. Take it one step further and you even have the capability of uploading and downloading locations to a GPS receiver.

Trails and routes can be added and saved using State Explorer BLM Edition. With the seamless map database for the entire state, trails or routes can easily span multiple maps. Detailed descriptions, access information and photographs can be linked to the trail. The trail profile, elevation and distance information are automatically calculated and shown in the data tabs. Adding digital photographs.

Digital photographs can be easily added to a waypoint on the map. Maptrails State Explorer BLM Edition uses most common image formats including bitmap (.bmp) and jpeg (.jpg) files.

Waypoint Manager

The waypoint manager helps easily organize, find, and edit personal information added to the map. Locations added to the map are identified by icons representing a wide range of recreational activities and can be organized into user-defined categories such as fishing, camping, vacation02, etc...

Powerful Map Navigation Tools

State Explorer BLM Edition makes it easy to navigate and find your way. Use the comprehensive statewide search feature to easily find geographic locations and personal information added to the map. Search can be targeted to find key words contained in geographic names, waypoint names and descriptions, trail name and descriptions. The search can also be targeted to find trails that are greater than or less than a specified elevation gain, trail length and highest elevation. Search can also be used to find waypoints on the map that have a specific GPS ID to upload and download with the GPS.

Once the desired location in the state is found, use the five levels of zoom/unzoom for detailed exploration of a specific location or to get a regional perspective.

Tandem View

Try finding one map that has all the information you need to plan a trip or use in the field. It's not easy to do. Maps are of different scales, contain different information, are printed at different dates and the list goes on. Tandem View from Maptrails provides a powerful interface to dynamically link two of the most common and valuable map types together in one integrated system. With the State Explorer BLM Edition software and Tandem View map package you can link Bureau of Land Management maps with USGS 7.5 minute topographic maps and create and print custom maps - 2 are better than 1.

Some specific advantages of Tandem View:

Detailed Topography Combined With Regional Map View
USGS 7.5 minute maps having 40 foot contours display the most detailed topography not shown in 1:100K BLM maps. BLM map's larger scale provides a more regional perspective.

More Current Map Information plus Comprehensive Land Features
Highlight roads and geographic features found on the more current BLM maps and have the information shown on the more detailed USGS maps.

Forested Lands Alongside Public and Private Land Status
Transfer land status from the BLM to the USGS topographic maps. Transfer forested areas from the USGS maps to the BLM.

The Tandem View software is already included on the State Explorer BLM CD. However, you will also need to purchase the Tandem View 7.5-minute maps for your state. Both the State Explorer BLM software AND the Tandem View USGS mapset are needed.

Tandem View uniquely provides the ability to view 7.5 minute USGS maps and 1:100K Bureau of Land Management maps together for any area of the state you're interested in!

BLM States Available

Bureau of Land Management maps are based on USGS 1:100,000-scale quadrangle maps modified and published as Bureau of Land Management editions. These maps show Surface Management Status and Surface Minerals Management Status, in addition to basic topography and labels for major topographic features and roads. BLM maps are in many cases more current than the USGS maps. BLM maps also show Wilderness area boundaries and other recreational information not found on USGS maps

Coverage is limited to the western states with greater than 70 percent of the maps for the state available as BLM editions (AZ, CA, CO, ID, MT, NM, NV, OR, UT, WA, WY). To provide a seamless BLM map set for the entire west, BLM Surface Management maps were the highest priority. If the Surface Management map was not available, either the USGS 1:100,000 or BLM Mineral Management map are used.

BLM Map Disclaimer

Note to all map users, GeoQUAD and BLM State Explorer contain Bureau of Land Management Maps. The official land record in the respective offices of the Bureau of Land Management or other responsible agencies should be checked for an up to date status on any specific tract of land before traveling to that area.
